Carol’s Talit

Carol’s tallit was the most fun to design. She and her family live in Minnesota and from an early age she was captivated by the stories of Laura Engels Wilder. One summer her family took a trip following the Wilder’s family trek west through Nebraska and visiting several museums along the way where Carol’s mother purchased some lovely antique lace from the Wilder era. Carol told me she wanted a tallit inspired by the Wilder stories…what to do??  After thinking for awhile, I told her that when I think of fabrics of the mid-19th Century I see images of quilts…and our idea was born. I designed Carol’s tallit using a weave structure called block design, reminiscent of the quilts constructed of blocks. We used the beautiful old lace as the atarah gathered a little around the neck line. In this tallit I used my favorite combination of silk (75%) and wool (25%), and Carol loved it!
