Jane’s Tallit

One of the first tallits I ever made is this white silk one. A friend was preparing for her mitzvah and I asked her, “What’s your favorite color.” She replied “red.” Oh, dear, …ok…what to do? Today, I would probably take work it differently, but then I was just starting to weave. I wove with 20/2 silk in both warp and weft, then on a different warp I wove a twill border using the red. At the time I was still at Haywood Community College in their fiber arts program and thus had access to the photography studio. For my graduate portfolio I took this photo using a friend as the model. It made a splendid cover for my portfolio.
